Rip-roarin’ album launch at HMV

THE second album of pipe rock sensations The Dangleberries will be launched next weekend at the Loreburne Centre, Dumfries.

Entitled Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street, the long awaited follow-up to last year’s rip-roaring debut will take off at the HMV stores on Sunday, July 12 with a rousing and raucous live set.

The band will be performing all the tracks from the album in the store from 1pm.

Drummer and vocalist Andy Smith said: “HMV are setting aside half the store for us to perform inside, so it should be a great hour of entertainment.”

“You’ll certainly be able to hear us, probably from the High Street,” added piper Shona Henderson.

For the few who are unfamiliar with The Dangleberries, they are a 12-piece collection of talented musicians, most based in the Stewartry, who play traditional bagpipe music but with a unique brand of drums and guitar accompaniment.

“We are a group of friends who became disillusioned with the pipe band network and decided to get together and do something a wee bit different,” they explained.

“We got together in September 2001 and have enjoyed playing at festivals such as the Wickerman and the Tartan Heart.”

The new album, like their first — A Richt Guid Horkin — covers a range of traditional Scottish music, some of the band’s own compositions (penned by piper Fritz and Mungo Henderson) and some covers.

Famed for their loud piped versions of heavy rock classics such as Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, this time The Dangleberries have gone for a more modern sound and Nae Sleep Tae Regent Street includes covers from the Scissor Sisters, Paulo Nutini and the Zutons, as well as some very traditional favourites all given The Dangleberries’ hallmark treatment.

The Dangleberries comprise — Pipers: Mungo Henderson; Fraser Henderson; Shonagh Henderson; and Annika Jardine.

Drummers: Paul Kirkwoo; Kenny Hall; Andrew Smith; Tommy Cannon; and “Crazy” Dave Arnold. Guitarists: Ian Fenwick; and Alan Ramage. Percussionist Annie Davie.

The album was recorded by Doug Carroll both at the Lochside Theatre, Castle Douglas, and in his studio.

The band are hot favourites on the Scottish festival circuit and are regulars at The Wickerman and Belladrum’s Tartan Heart.
