The final RBS League Saturday of 2012 saw three of the south west teams in action in RBS West Division Two but joy for only one.
Second-placed Annan won away at Wigtownshire 21-3 to close the gap on Stewartry to one point, the Blacks staying on 42 points after losing 8-17 in a game that should have been won away at third placed Lenzie.
Stewartry missed too many chances and only had a John Fingland try and John Muir penalty score to show for their efforts as Lenzie completed the league double having won 9-7 at Castle Douglas.
This result leaves the Glasgow side five points behind Stewartry with three games in hand while Annan also have three games in hand but have still to play Stewartry twice in the three way promotion battle.
This week’s games:
RBS Championship League A: Seventh placed Dumfries are at home to sixth placed Whitecraigs where a victory for the Saints would move them above the Glasgow side.
Whitecraigs won the previous game 20-3 back in September.
Leaders Falkirk, who Dumfries beat last week, have another tough game at home to third placed Cartha QP.
RBS West Division One: This week’s games are rearranged from December 15 when only league leaders Marr played, beating Irvine 45-8. Newton Stewart travel up to Kilmarnock who won 38-19 down at Wigtown back in September.
RBS West Division Two: There will be a good sized crowd at Greenlaw this week when league leaders Stewartry take on bottom of the league Cumbernauld.
The Blacks are hoping to complete the win double, having won 27-17 up at Cumbernauld with a bonus point win vital to keep ahead in the promotion race.
Unbeaten second-placed Annan will be looking for the same type of result against ninth placed Waysiders Drumpellier who they have already thumped 55-0.
Third-placed Lenzie are away at Clydebank and should also win. Eighth placed Wigtownshire can overtake Cambuslang in seventh place if the Blues can avenge a narrow 18-20 defeat earlier in the season.
The other games are Strathaven v Carrick and Strathendrick v McLaren. Kick-offs are 2pm.
Stewartry players should meet at Greenlaw 12.30pm and contact John Muir on 07854363129 or Ian Fenwick on 07739287882 about team selection.
Senior training continues at Barstobrick or Greenlaw on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.
RBS West Division Four: Second placed Moffat start the New Year away at fourth placed Bishopton in a rearranged fixture.
RBS East Division One: Langholm restart their league programme next week.
RBS 2nd XV West Division Two: Stewartry 2nd XV restart their league programme next week at home to Dalziel 3rd XV.
