A Stewartry man died at the scene of a motorbike crash on a busy trunk road.
Roofer Scott McNicol was heading out of Castle Douglas on his way home along the busy A713 road to Ayr when the accident happened on Tuesday.
His Suzuki SV650s left the road on an undulating straight section near Stewartry Rugby Club’s Greenlaw ground just south of the junction with the B795 Garranton to Laurieston road shortly after 6pm.
Police said Mr McNicol, who was 24, was heading home to nearby Glenlochar Farm at the time. He was fatally injured in the crash which did not involve any other vehicle.
The road was closed until the early hours of Wednesday morning while officers carried out investigations at the scene.
Police have appealed for witnesses. A spokesman said: “It is always tragic when someone so young has lost their life on the road.
“We are still trying to establish what happened. The road would have been busy at this time of night. “
A report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal. Scott’s family were too upset yesterday to speak about the accident.
But friends of Scott’s brother, Richard McNicol, flooded the social networking website Facebook with messages of support.
One wrote: “Heartbreaking news. He will never be forgotten.”
Another user posted: “So sorry for your loss. Thoughts are with you and your family.”
The police spokesman added: “Anyone who saw the crash or saw the motorcycle on the road before this time is asked to call 0845 600 5701.”
