A Dalbeattie builder has scooped a coveted national construction award for an extension he built just yards from his own home.
Michael Gaffney, 59, of Port Road in the town did the job for Liz Wilbur on her 170-year-old property.
And the granite work has resulted in Michael, of M Gaffney & Sons, being named Scotland’s “Heavenly Builder” of the year by the Federation of Master Builders
Mr Gaffney said: “I was told just after New Year - I did the job around last March. I’m delighted- this is the second big award I have won - I won one 15 years ago as well but it was not as prestigious as this one.
“I’m going down to London, too,for the overall awards.
“I’ve been in business since 1978 on my own but this extension is only 10 yards from my house on Port Road.”
According to judges - Michael claimed the region’s Heavenly Builder prize thanks to a keen eye for detail, unfailing good humour and bucket-loads of enthusiasm for the job. Michael will now go through to the national finals. Liz Wilbur, who nominated the builder for the prize, is also heading to London to see how Michael gets on.
She said: “ It is a wonderful testament to the skill of a local building firm using reclaimed granite slates whilst incorporating the latest energy saving insulation and materials.
“Whilst the work was being carried out Mick and his team greeted us with smiling faces, were keen to please and hard working even though at times the weather was horrible. Their attention to detail and pride in the finished product was second to none.”
Grahame Barn, FMB Services Director for Scotland, said: “The Heavenly Builder award gives clients the opportunity to thank their builder for going above and beyond the call of duty to complete the job and turn a potentially stressful experience into an enjoyable one. The standard of entries this year is amongst the highest we have seen and reflects the expertise, attention to detail and professionalism of the region’s builders.
“Michael should feel justly proud of his achievement in winning the Heavenly Builder award, and we wish him every success in the national competition.”
Heavenly Builder is category seven of the awards and is nominated by satisfied customers of firms whose annual turnover is under £300,000. The national winners of the 11th Master Builder of the Year Awards will be announced by architect and TV presenter George Clarke at a ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London on March 20.
