Teenagers turn over Peebles

LAST Sunday Dumfries played a friendly match against Peebles on a benign Nunholm track which looked like offering minimal assistance to the bowlers.

This premise was put to the test first by Dumfries who opened the bowling with skipper Colin MacKenzie and Andrew Kyle getting the home side off to a good start taking the first Peebles wicket with only 16 runs on the board.

However, some loose bowling and Peebles perseverance enabled the visitors to maintain a steady run rate throughout their innings and their efforts were duly rewarded with a score of 180 with the loss of only four wickets at tea.

In reply, Dumfries made a strong start with Marcus Richardson and Cameron Telfer putting on 49 before Telfer was bowled by a deceptive Birchmore delivery.

Adam Elliot then joined Richardson at the crease to build the telling partnership of the innings as both batsman found space to play a range of expansive shots before Richardson, having just bagged his 50, was bowled mistiming a ball from Cresswell.

Dumfries continued to close in on the Peebles total with a nurdling masterclass from non-teenager Keith Walker setting the pace before one quick sprint too many forced his retiral to the pavilion.

Elliot maintained the momentum and had his 50 in sight when he was joined in the middle by Andrew Kyle who plundered most of the remaining runs required before Elliot holed out in the covers.

MacKenzie, with a calming influence, then joined Kyle to steer the Dumfries side home to a six wicket win.
