EXTREME runner Jo Zakrzewski is gearing up for the race of her life – and she admits she’s terrified.
The ultra-distance athlete will embark on a 100K, only weeks after picking up bronze in her first ever 50K event.
The Dumfries Running Club member will take to the tracks for Scotland in the World Championship 100K race in the Netherlands tomorrow.
And the big names in the competition have got her nerves jangling.
She said: “I’m petrified! There are a lot of competitors in the race that I know the names of. They are famous runners.
“It’s the longest distance I have ever taken part in and I’ll admit I am nervous.
“But the same was true when I took part in the 50K.
“You start by focusing on making sure you finish, but as the race goes on, you realise you are more than making up the numbers. You are there to compete.
“I imagine it will be similar once I get going on Saturday.”
Jo claimed third place in the World Trophy 50K final in Assen, Holland in an impressive three hours and 26 minutes.
And after tasting medal glory last month, she is all set for the 100K.
Jo was selected to take part in the event back in June but was instructed to keep the news quiet until it was announced nationally.
She has been preparing for the event since then by running on tired legs to prepare for the mind-boggling distances her body will have to endure.
