THIS year’s Gallovidian 10k Road Race proved to be more popular than ever, with the entry limit being reached long before the day of the event.
Undaunted by the atrocious weather conditions, the athletes sped round the flat, fast course and many runners recorded new personal best times.
Race director Steve Head was especially grateful to all those who officiated on the night, praising the many people who stood out in the pouring rain to ensure that the runners were well cared for.
The race itself was a hard-fought affair, with talented squads of runners coming from Irvine, Dumfries and host club Border Harriers.
David Millar of Irvine AC led from the start and entered the stadium 11 seconds clear of Paul Arcari to finish in a very impressive time of 31 minutes 58 seconds.
Previous winner George Thompson, of Border Harriers, had to be content with third place, but was consoled with the prize of first runner in the over 50s competition.
The ladies event was battled out by Border Harrier club-mates Gill Laithwaite and former winner Philippa Wakefield.
On this occasion it was Gill who took the honours by just over half-a-minute in 37.12.
Mhairi Douglas, of Dumfries RC, claimed third spot with a strong run, finishing just under the 40-minute mark.
