Queen of the South's oldest fan passes away

ONE of Queen of the South's longest serving supporters passed away last week.

Elizabeth Bell Morton, known to her friends as simply "Betty", passed away after a short illness on Tuesday, September 23, at the age of 87.

Betty was a dedicated fan of the Doonhamers all her life.

She took up her membership in 1946, after being de-mobbed from the Women's Royal Army Corps.

Betty was well known among supporters and was easily recognised by her blue tartan rug which she took to every game.

Although a loyal Queens supporter, Betty was not afraid to give criticism when she felt it was necessary.

Family friend Joe Beattie remembers watching Betty supporting the Doonhamers from when he was just a child.

He said: "Betty was there on the day when Queens played Hearts in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. As a small boy I remember seeing her in the stand surrounded by men all wearing hats!

"She was a wonderful supporter, a dedicated follower and someone the club was fortunate to have as a member for over 60 years."
