Fans take the long road
A HARDY band of 35 Queen of the South supporters are set to embark on an almost 2,000-mile round trip to see their team.
The group will be among 850 Doonhamers heading for the Danish town of Farum to see Queens play FC Nordsjaelland in the second leg of their UEFA Cup second round qualifier on Tuesday night.
And what a trip it is set to be.
The 35 fans, who all follow their team in the First Division as part of the Doonhamers Travel Club, have an impressive itinerary laid out in front of them.
First up on Monday, it’s a bus from Dumfries to Prestwick Airport to catch a plane (49 miles).
Then it’s onto a flight heading for Stansted Airport outside London (317 miles).
After that, the fans fly from Stansted to Copenhagen (568 miles).
Then it’s just the small matter of a bus trip to Farum for the game (12 miles).
And after the match they do it all again, but in reverse.
It may seem like a lot for some people, but for dedicated football fans, it’s all part of the enjoyment.
Ross Corbett, one of the 35 fans who’s heading on the Danish trip, said: “We’re all looking forward to it.
“It should be a good trip.
“The Monday night should be good as well because the guy who runs the Dubliner Bar in Copenhagen has agreed to put on a bit of a spread for us and lower the prices of the pints.
“It’s all part of the experience of going to the match and seeing Queens in Europe.”
Queens are looking to overturn a 2-1 deficit, but with the might of 850 travelling fans behind them, it may just be possible.
