NITHSDALE WANDERERS are hosting a grand pro-am charity match on Sunday against celebrity side Dukla Pumpherston .
The match, at the Lorimer Park, Sanquhar, will see well-known professional footballers and celebrity guests challenge the Nithsdale Legends.
The visiting players will include Chic Young, Gerry Collins, John McDonald, Chic Charnley, Tommy Sheridan, Albert Craig, Robert Connor and Lindsay Hamilton. The local team of ‘old crocks’ has been drawn from former Nithsdale team members who are determined to show that they still have some fine skills and mettle.
The first part of the celebration, being held to mark the completion of their Nithsdale Wanderers Pavilion, will be a presentation at 1pm of a plaque by David Ewart from sportscotland.
Sportscotland has helped fund both internal and external improvements to this local club’s pavilion.
The hard-working Nithsdale Wanderers committee, who have raised a lot of money themselves, fully appreciate the assistance that sportscotland have given them.
The club members are very proud of their pavilion which is now reckoned to be the best facility amongst south-west Scotland’s amateur football teams.
It includes separate changing rooms and showers for each team and the officials as well as a spacious licensed club lounge.
At 1.40 pm before the game commences there will be a sponsored ‘Crossbar Challenge’ when these two teams will be able to display their ability to hit the goal’s crossbar - as they have done frequently in the past! A bottle of champagne is up for grabs!
The game kicks off at 2pm and to round off the afternoon’s festivities the guests, sponsors, VIPs, and past Nithsdale club members will relax in the club lounge and enjoy a fine buffet.
