Standard readers show their support for Annan Athletic

MORE than 100 messages sent to the Standard backing Annan’s bid to join division three have been delivered to the Scottish Football League.

Letters and online messages of support flooded in to the Standard office in support of the newspaper’s Backing the Bid campaign over the past few weeks, calling on the SFL to elect Annan into the league setup.

These notes and messages, together with copies of articles and a covering letter from Standard editor Elizabeth Martin commending the bid, were posted to the SFL on Friday, less than a week before a final decision is made as to which one of five clubs will be chosen for the coveted league place following the demise of Gretna.

Annan chairman Henry McClelland told the Standard he was grateful for the support of Backing the Bid and feels it will give his club’s already strong case even more weight.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted at getting that support, because it was not only from people in the town of Annan, but across the whole area.

“I think showing we have support across Dumfries and Galloway and that the region can sustain another football league club is important for our bid, and can only help our case.”
