THE FINAL of the DBA Top Ten contest was held on Monday between Marchmount and Annan at Gretna Bowling Club.
Luckily, the weather was dry and, in a keenly-fought tournament, the outcome rested on the last bowl both in the fours and the pairs which came good for Annan to win the Top Ten Cup by six points to two.
The details of the match (Annan first):
Singles: Ian Blenkinsop 8 Colin Peacock 21.
Pairs: David Linton, Eddy Murray 17 Bobby Jess, Steven Lowther 14.
Triples: Alan Boyd, Ian Donaldson, Stuart Begg 14 Craig Poland, Sandy Duff, Craig Allen 8.
Fours: Joe Menzies, Nicky Nicholson, A Service, Roger Murray.
The DBA vice president Rae Graham presented the prizes and the Top Ten Cup to the president of Annan, Eddy Murray.
Thanks were extended to the ladies for the catering and to Gretna Bowling Club for their hospitality.
DBA Junior singles: The Dumfriesshire Bowling Association Junior Singles County Championships for the Sid Robbins Cup, sponsored by Annandale Insurance, was held at Lockerbie Bowling Club on Saturday.
There was a very disappointing turnout when Eaglesfield, Glencairn and Sanquhar did not appear. Marchmount and Thornhill had already given notice of non-attendance.
Therefore only four clubs were included in the draw with the following results:
Lockerbie 21 Gretna 8; Annan 21 Dumfries 13.
The final will be between Lockerbie (Kenny Carruthers) v Annan (Brady Graham) at Marchmount Bowling Club on Saturday, August 13.
Open club tournaments
Eastriggs: open American triples for the Hornby Rosebowl, sponsored by P D Hornby, was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Thornhill: open singles, sponsored by Carronbridge Sawmills, Thornhill, for the Bill Adamson Memorial Trophy, was postponed and will now be held on Saturday, September 17.
Annan:tournament week started with open triples sponsored by Kian Coaches for the Kian Coaches trophy. The winners were Alan Boyd, Jim Moonie, Andy Nelson (Annan); runners up were Margaret Johnstone, David Bell, Joe Menzies (Annan). The semi finalists were Christine and Kian Creighton, Willie Adam (Annan), Jim and June Austin, (Max), Ralph Richardson (N/Abbey). The presentation was made by Ben, grandson of the sponsor.
Monday was the turn of the mixed pairs, sponsored by Willie and Margaret Scott. The winners were Fred Hollies (Annan), Isobel Fraser (E/fld); the runners up were Stewart and Sally Gilmour (CD). The semi finalists were Debbie Renwick, Davy Ferguson (E/riggs) and Alex Gibson (N/Abbey), Maureen Feenan (Dalbt). The presentation was made by Margaret Scott, sponsor.
Tuesday saw the gents pairs sponsored by Walter Glendinning and trophy winners were Trevor Taylor (Wigton), Bernard Jackson (E/riggs) and the runners up were Kevin Murray (E/riggs), Willie Adam (Annan). The semi finalists were David Ferguson, Ian Nisbet (E/riggs) and Eddy Murray (Annan) and Roger McGhie (L/mben). The presentation was made by Walter Glendinning.
American Ladies Pairs for the Jim Anderson Trophy, sponsored by Joyce and Margaret Irvine was won by Sheena Kirkpatrick (Annan), Betty Kerr (M/mount). Second: wereChristine Povall, Christine Creighton (Annan) and third were Joyce Sawyer, Doreen Cartner (E/fld). The presentations were made by the sponsors.
New Abbey: Mixed American Triples: 1 Keith Shuttleworth, Jim Clingan, Christine Tennant (N/Abbey); 2 Maurice, Sheila and Gail Service (N/Abbey); 3 Tommy Feenan, Rab Mason, Cathy Geddes (Dlbt). The presentation was made by president Oliver Clingan.
Gatehouse: Mixed Triples for the Bert McCormick Memorial Trophy were won by Stewart and Sally Gilmour, Rob Garvie (C.D.); the runners up were Angie Donaldson, Bob Gilchrist, Julie McDowell (Max). The semi finalists were Jock and Kate McGarrie, Joe Caldow (A/cairn) and Ian Murray, Peter Hamilton, Valerie Russell (Spalding). The presentation was made a family representative.
Dumfries: Mixed American Triples for the Jenny Holden Trophy. Jenny was a founder member and a past president of the Dumfries Bowling Club's ladies section in 1959, and a former president of the SSWB.
The results were: 1 Jim and Kate McShane, David Cannan (Dfs); 2 Maureen Love, Kerry and Robbie Fraser (Dfs); 3 Peter and Greta Howieson, Irene Brown (Dfs); 4 Jock and Sandra Newlands, M McQueen (M/mount). The president Tom Forteath called upon Jenny Holden to present the prizes and Jenny received a bouquet of flowers.
Gatehouse: ladies pairs for the Molly Holmes Trophy, sponsored by Cream of Galloway, was won by Maureen Feenan, Kathleen Harper (Dlbt); runners up were Lorna Dobie, Debbie Cochrane (C.D). The semi finalists were Helen Wemyss, Sally Gilmore (C.D.) and June Dinnell, Jean McCartney (Kbt). The presentation was made by the president Annie Margaret Johnstone.
Charities
The first round of the charities competition for the Richardson Cup was held on Wednesday, July 6, on various greens.
The final stages were held at Maxwelltown Bowling Club on Wednesday, July 13. Dumfries Bowling Club excelled by being both the winners and the runners up. The winners were Alexa Snape, Margaret McLaren, Greta Howieson, May Cannan and the runners up were Jean Reid, Margaret Cook, Anne Motroni, Kathy Moffat.
The Charities started in 1962 and has raised thousands of pounds for good causes. Organised by Margaret Crosbie and her committee, the amount raised this year is £1000 pounds for the Salvation Army, Lockerbie.
A cheque was presented to Jim and Margaret Prescott, Lockerbie, by the president of Maxwelltown Bowling Club Alan Telfer Snr.
SSWBA
The South of Scotland Women's Association played their county singles on Tuesday, July 12, at Dumfries Bowling Club green in ideal weather conditions.
The four semi finalists were: Helen Bell (Lochmaben), Sheena Kirkpatrick (Annan), Margaret Gillies (Marchmount), Jennifer Poland (Marchmount).
The results were: Margaret Gillies (M/mount) lost to Sheena Kirkpatrick (Annan); and Helen Bell (L/maben) beat Jennifer Poland (M/mount).
Sheena Kirkpatick (Annan) and Helen Bell (L/maben) go through to the county finals on Monday, August 15.
The County Fours was held at Castle Douglas on Friday. There were only eight entries but this was down to seven before the start.
The results were as follows: Lochmaben (H Bell, H Sloan, I Hastings, A Gordon) lost to Castle Douglas (J Maxwell, A Houston, H Wemyss, L Dobie); Kirkcudbright (C Docherty, A Thomson, I Cairney, S Greggan) lost to Maxwelltown (A Donaldson, I Moffat, M Jackson, A Fair); New Abbey (D Thomson, V Shackleton, M Cowan, D Bigham) lost to Dumfries (J Reid, M McLaren, A Motroni).
In the afternoon Kirkcudbright (J Dinnell, B Whitelaw, P McKenna, J McCartney) beat Castle Douglas and Maxwelltown lost to Dumfries.
