Ladies through to fours semis

NITHSDALE Indoor Bowls Club was competing in the preliminary round of the National Fours on Saturday against Dumbarton at Blantyre BC.

Representing Nithsdale were Donald Poland, Alan, Willie and David Green who emerged the winners by 20 shots to Dumbarton’s 16.

Nithsdale went through to the first round but lost out to Auchinleck 16 shots to 25.

Newton Stuart were also taking part in the preliminary round but lost to Cumbernauld 20 shots to six.

Nithsdale ladies were competing in the National Fours at East Kilbride, sponsored by Thomas Taylor (Bowls) Ltd, on Saturday

Nithsdale, represented by Maureen Love, Irene Brown, Valerie Gordon and Kathy Moffat, defeated Irvine 27/15 in the first round.

On Sunday at Blantyre in the second round, Nithsdale knocked out Paisley by 22/16.

They then met Ardrossan in quarter-finals and qualified for the semi-final by defeating Ardrossan 24/20.

Nithsdale now meet Falkirk (I Kilpatrick, S Reid, J Smith, J Brooksby) on Saturday, March 28, at Dundee Bowling Club.

Newton Stuart also took part in the preliminary round of the National Fours on Saturday but lost out to Whiteinch at East Kilbride.

Triples: A last reminder that the Nithsdale Indoor Bowls Club is proposing to hold an open mixed triples competition for first prizes of £250, sponsored by Dumfries and Galloway College on Sunday, March 15.

AGM: The 119th agm of Maxwelltown Bowling Club was held on Thursday, February 26, at which there was a turnout of 64 members present.

The retiring president Adrian Potts welcome the members then called for a minute’s silence in respect of members that had passed away last season.

Adrian then gave a comprehensive resumé of the club’s activities over the last season and thanking all those had helped him during his term of office.

The minutes of the previous year together with the financial statement prepared by the treasurer Willie Simpson, both of which had been circulated prior to the meeting, were debated and passed unanimously.

The various reports were made by: bar convener John Andrew, premise convener John McNay, competition secretary: in the absence of Alan Telfer Snr the report was made by Claire Shaw, social convener John Donald and the green ranger Brian Martin who thanked the green keeper Jim Burnett for his hard work over the season and for the winter preparations together for all the volunteers who held to improve the banking.

The general secretary Eric Muirhead gave an extended report of last season’s activities.

Appointments of office bearer (ex-officio) for the coming season were made.

The retiring president Adrian Potts vacated the chair in favour of the president elect Rae Gall, vice president: Claire Shaw; secretary: Eric Muirhead; treasurer: Willie Simpson.

The various conveners were all re-elected, bar: John Andrew; premise: John McNay; social: John Donald; competitions: Alan Telfer Snr.

Committee elected for the coming season: past president Adrian Potts; Jim Nelson, Alan Telfer Jnr, Martin Sproat, John Fair, Peter Pledge, Jim Donaldson. Auditors: Gordon Audsley, Stuart Fair.

The annual subscription remains at £95.

The president Rae Gall presented John McNay with an award of life membership for services to the club.

Motions recommended by management committee:

That new members to the club be allowed to join for a fee of £30 for the first year only. Motion was passed unanimously.

That the ladies associate memberships will cease as at the end of the season 2009 and that the ladies must join as full member in 2010. This motion was passed.

The opening date for the new season, weather permitting will be on Saturday, April 18; closing date Saturday, September 19 2009.
