Seniors win cup preliminary

NITHSDALE Indoor Bowls Club was competing in the Senior Scottish Cup at Auchinleck against Paisley on Wednesday, January 28.

Nithsdale won by 66 shots to 57 shots.

The details were as follows (Paisley first): A McIntosh 9 Joe McCall 23; T Patterson 20 W Dalgleish 8; A Cruickshanks 12 Iain McLelland 11; W Wood 16 Stewart Gilmour 57.

Nithsdale Bowls Club went forward into the first round on Wednesday against Auchinleck at East Kilbride. The result will be reported in the next issue of the Standard.

Newton Stewart were also competing in the Senior Scottish Cup at the Nithsdale Bowling Club on Wednesday, January 28 against Prestwick.

Newton Stewart run out the winners by 67 shots to 58 shots in a closely fought match.

There were never more that three shots between the two sides until the 15th end when Prestwick managed only another four shots whereas Newton Stewart scored 10 shots to give them the winning result and went forward to the first round on Wednesday, February 4 against Inverclyde at Ardrossan, result next week.

Iain McLelland, Billy Moffat, and Marty Rice were representing Nithsdale in the preliminary round of the National Gents Triples on Sunday, January 31 but lost to Blantyre 27/3.

Nithsdale players are away competing in the preliminary round of the Scottish Cup, sponsored by Robert Horn, Jewellers, against East Lothian at Tweedbank on Saturday (2pm).

The players that have been selected to take part are:

(Skip) Martyn Rice, Donald Poland, Willie Mair, Andrew Snape;

(Skip) Billy Haining, Stewart Gilmour, Andy Carmichael, Peter Gracie;

(Skip) Colin Peacock, Iain McLelland, Joe McCall, Jack Kirk;

(Skip) Craig Poland, Alan Green, David Green, Willie Dalgliesh.

On Sunday Nithsdale Indoor Bowls Club is competing in the Greengauge Junior Challenge cup in a round robin format. Representing the club at the Galleon will be by Kirsty Haining and Greg Corbett.

Ladies

Jan Oliver, Margaret Gillies, and Nell Garside were representing Nithsdale in the preliminary round of the National Ladies Triples on Sunday, resulting in a win for Nithsdale over Auchinleck 22-10.

In the first round Nithsdale lost to Blantyre 23/8.

Mixed triples

The Nithsdale Indoor Bowls Club is proposing to hold an open mixed triples competition for first prizes of £250, sponsored by Dumfries and Galloway College on Sunday, March 15. Entry is £9 per triple and the closing date is Friday, March 6.
