Seniors finish in third place

NITHSDALE seniors were away to Prestwick in their final match in the Scottish League West A Section on Saturday.

The seniors started the season optimistically and won eight games from eleven to keep in touch at the top of the league table.

To gain the top spot they had to win their last match but this did not pan out, Prestwick winning by 84 shots to 35 shots.

This result relegated Nithsdale to third place in the league table.

The final league table: Prestwick 19 pts (+ 217), Auchinleck 17 pts (+ 131), Nithsdale 16pts (- 6), Blantyre 11 pts (-41), Newton Stewart 8 pts (- 110) Galleon 7 pts (-45); West of Scotland 6 pts (-1146).

Team championships

Nithsdale qualified for the first round proper in the Team Championships (Top Ten) against Newton Stewart at Auchinleck on Sunday, winning by five points (70 shots) to three points (64 shots).

The details of the results by the players that were representing Nithsdale are as follows:

Singles: Craig Poland 13 Davie Cannon 21. Mixed Pairs: Jessie Adamson, Stewart Gilmour 16 Carol & Alistair McMillan 16. Mixed Triples: Jim Cowan, Kath and Billy Moffat 20 Annie Jim Sproat, Brendan Handley 13.

Mixed Fours: Jenny and Donald Poland, Maureen Love, David Fraser 21 Bill McMillan, Fiona Lochrie, Morag Lamb, Robert Bark 14.

Nithsdale Indoors Bowls Club goes forward into the second round the Team Championships against Blantyre at the Galleon Sunday at 2pm).

Scottish Cup

Nithsdale Indoor Bowls Club is competing in Senior Scottish Cup at Auchinleck against Paisley on Wednesday, January 28 at 11am.

Players selected to take part are as follows:

Skip: Iain McLelland, Billy Moffat, Mario Motroni, Jim Gillespie;

Skip: Joe McCall, Rae Gall, Ralph Richardson, Jack Kirk;

Skip: Stewart Gilmour, Jim Austin, David Hunter, Peter Gracie;

Skip: Willie Dalgleish, Andy Carmichael, Bob Gilchrist, Jim Cowan.

Reserves: Andy Lowrie, Bob Dalgleish, Tom Paterson.

Newton Stewart is also competing in the Senior Scottish Cup on Wednesday, January 28 against Prestwick at Nithsdale Bowling Club (11am).

The results will be reported in a later issue of the Standard.

Ladies league

Nithsdale Ladies’ final match in the Scottish League H section is at home against Auchinleck on Saturday at 2pm)

Players taking part are:

Open mixed triples

The Nithsdale Indoor Bowls Club is proposing to hold an open mixed triples competition for first prizes of £250, sponsored by Dumfries and Galloway College, on Sunday, March 15. The tournament will start at 10am.

Entry is £9 per triple and the closing date is Friday, March 6.
