THE FIRST of the County Finals, the junior singles, was due to be held at Dumfries on Saturday fell victim to the rain.
The match was due to go ahead yesterday instead.
0n Sunday at Dumfries Bowling Club the weather relented, and although it was slightly wet to start in the morning, the afternoon matches were played in sunshine.
The results were as follows:.
Pairs (Coronation Cup): Lochmaben (Roger McGhie, Bruce Robison) 14 Thornhill (Bob Steel, Robert Peacock) 15.
Lochmaben after a slow start being 7/14 down at the 12th end pulled back six shots over the next 4 ends to tie at 14/14 but Thornhill scored the vital shot at the last end to win.
Mixed Pairs (Nithsdale District Cup): Dumfries (Iain McLelland, Jan Oliver) 19 Eastriggs (Simon Kirk, Debbie Renwick) 15. Dumfries had the edge being always in front throughout the match.
Senior Pairs (Senior Cup): Sanquhar (John Hiddleston, Bud Fleming) 10 Lockerbie (Andy Graham, Bob Dalziel) 8.
Triples (Border Cars Mazda Cup): Beechgrove (David Borthwick, Andy Armstrong, Ian Beattie) 7 Annan (Chris Donaldson, Willie Adam, Roger Murray) 17.
Fours (Isobel & Jim White Cup): Marchmount (Colin Peacock, Sandy Duff, A Dobson, Craig Allen) 13 Gretna (Colin Reilly, John Bryden Jnr, Robin Thorburn, J Laverick) 12.
Gretna were well in contention out in front by six shots at the 11th end but Marchmount rallied over the next six ends to score 8 shots to take the lead 13/11. Gretna scored one shot at the last end but not enough to stop Marchmount to emerge the winners.
Gents Singles (McGhie Dairies Cup): Dumfries (Willie Rice) 21 Crichton (Bill Greer) 20. Willie Rice took an early lead but Bill Greer fought back strongly to go in front. The match was poised at 20/20 but Willie Rice scored the one shot required to take the gents singles title.
The DBA president George Steel, the vice president David Nivison and Roger McGhie, the sponsor of the Gents Singles, made the presentations.
The rinks league, sponsored by the Dumfries and Galloway for the Standard Rosebowl, was won by Kirkconnel and the presentation was made the by DBA Competition Secretary Doug Boyer, on behalf of the sponsors, to the Kirkconnel president.
DBA Empire Trophy
On Monday, August 11 the Dumfriesshire Bowling Association held their second round of the Empire Exhibition Trophy.
The results were as follow: Kirkconnel 73 Thornhill 76 1/4; Crichton 54 Marchmount 109; Maxwelltown 63 Dumfries 112, Annan 90 Lockerbie 70. The semi finals will be held on Friday, August 15.
Open club tournaments
Dumfries/Marchmount: Mixed triples, sponsored by Sunrise Conservatories, was won by Derek Smith, Hugh Halliday, Eileen Smith and the runners up were Eric Brown, Tommy Donald, Mary Armstrong. The presentation was made by Kenny MacLauchlan, representative of the sponsors.
Dumfries: Gent singles for the Motroni Cup, sponsored by Sam Templeton Builders, was won by Iain McClelland (Dfs); runner up Salvatori Panico (Max). The semi finalists were Willie Rice (Max) and Kerry Fraser (Max).
Mario Motroni presented the prizes and trophy.
Dumfries: continued with their annual tournament with the mixed pairs for the (J I Reid Cup) sponsored by Wallaces Express. The winners were Alan Telfer Jnr, Angie Donaldson (Max), runners up Eric Hodgson, Isobel Brown (Max). The presentation was made by Jean Reid the donor of the trophy.
In the last game of Dumfries tournament was for the Gents pairs sponsored by Boyle Builders and Cup. Winners were Andrew and Graeme Snape (Dfs) runners up Norrie Wilson, Robert Love (Dfs). Joe Boyle, the sponsor, presented the prizes.
Maxwelltown: Gents American triples by invitation sponsored by Famous Grouse. Winners were Bob Gilchrist, Jim Burnett, Drew Kennedy (Max) and the runners up David Jess, Martyn and Willie Rice (Dfs). The presentation was made by vice president Rae Gall.
Lockerbie: Gents singles (15 shots up) for the Willie Cannon Cup sponsored by Tennant Breweries was won by Willie Shearer; runner up Dougie White, (both L/bie). Miffy Johnstone presented the prizes.
Kirkconnel: Open pairs cancelled due to lack of entries.
Canonbie: Mixed American Triples was cancelled due to weather conditions. The sum of £216 was collected and will be donated to charity.
St Mungo: Mixed American triples cancelled due to weather conditions.
Marchmount: two-bowl mixed pairs for the Byth Cup cancelled due to weather conditions.
Annan: Mixed pairs sponsored by Amps Mortgages and shield. The winners were Christine Povell, Billy Smith runners up Elizabeth Bell, Brian Murray (all Annan). The sponsors, Dianna Muir, and Robert Williamson made the presentations.
Dalbeattie: Annual tournament started with an open pairs sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland. The winners were: John Hiddleston, Ronnie Bonnar (Sanq) the runners up Stewart and Sally Gilmour (C D). Presentation was made by Neil Thomson, on behalf of the sponsors.
Dalbeattie: Singles sponsored by Liz McFerran was won by Stewart Gilmour (C D) runner up Tommy Feenan (Dalbt). Presentation was made by the president Ronnie Gibson.
Scottish bowlers under 25:The Dumfriesshire/ Stewartry under 25's "round robin" tournament is been held at Hawick on Sunday August 17. Also taking part are Fife, Midlothian and the Borders. The outcome will be reported in the next issue of the Standard.
Royal British Legion (Scotland): On Saturday, August 9 Sanquhar Bowling Club hosted the rinks National Final of the Royal British Legion (Scotland) in which Sanquhar emerged the winner represented by Billy Moore, Billy Watson, Ian McInally, Greg Taylor defeating Stonehaven. Presentation was made by Robert Gilbert on behalf of Royal British Legion (Scotland)
Ladies section
Thornhill: Pairs sponsored by Pollock & McLean, solicitors, Thornhill, for the Morton Shield. The winners were Betty Kerr (M/mount), June Court (Max), runners up Liz Johnstone, Annie Williamson (T/hill). Presentation was made by Annie Williamson on behalf of the sponsors.
Gretna: Pairs for the Lucchessi Cup. Elizabeth & Jemima Richardson (N/castleton) were the winners and Chrissie
McKinlay, Isobel Fraser (E/fld) the runners up. Isobel Baxter made the presentations.
Lockerbie: Triples for the Jean Jackson Memorial trophy, sponsored by Loreburn Shopping Centre was won by Angie Donaldson, Maureen Jackson, Alison Fair (Max) runners up Molly Geddes, Marion Caskie (C.R.), Hazel Edgar (M/mount). Past president Ella Ramsden and Alice Jardine presented the prizes on behalf of the family.
SSWBA County finals
The South of Scotland Women's Bowling Association County Finals are being held on Monday, August 18, at Marchmount Bowling Club.
The players taking part are:
9.30am Pairs: Helen Wemyss, Marion McTurk v Janice Maxwell, Anne Houston (both Castle Douglas).
12.30pm Singles: Lorna Dobie v Janice Maxwell (both Castle Douglas).

Inter association
The South of Scotland Association is playing Wigtownshire Women's Bowling Association at Stranraer to-day Friday August 15 in the Inter Association.
