No national titles obtained at Scottish Bowling National Championships

THE SCOTTISH Bowling Association National Championships were held at Northfield, Ayr last week.

No National Championship titles were obtained although the triples reached the quarter finals.

In the singles: Bob Steel (T/hill): defeated Paul Carnegie (Northgate - Arbroath) in the first round 21/19 but lost in the second round to D Peacock (Danderhall) 21/12.

Junior Singles: In the first round Alan Davies (C/Douglas) beat Steven Allan (Menstrie) 21/14 but in the second round was defeated by Stuart Beddington (Tweedmouth) 21/17.

In the pairs, the first round saw Hamish Sinclair, Arthur McFegan (Spalding) winning by 15/11 over Dyce but lost out in the second round to Bonnyrigg 23/17.

In the triples, Ian Brown, Edward Harkness, Robert Peacock (T/hill) reached the quarter finals by beating in the first round Port Glasgow 14/13, in the second round defeated Craigentinny 15/14. In the quarter finals they lost out to Clackmannan 19/6.

In the fours, Robert Mason, Ronny Penny, Bruce Richardson, Scott McCubbin (Dalb) lost in the first round to Markinch 17/7.

Senior Fours: Jim Moonie, Jim Kerr, John Moore, George McCulloch also went out in the first round to Coldstream 21/11/.

DBA Empire Trophy: On Monday, August 4 the Dumfriesshire Bowling Association held their first round of the Empire Exhibition Trophy.

The results were as follow: Sanquhar 72 Kirkconnel 76; Thornhill w/o Gretna s/c.

The second round will be held on Monday, August 11.

Tournaments

Maxwelltown: Continued with the annual tournament with the mixed triples, sponsored by K & K Carpets for the Carlsberg Cup. Keith Shuttleworth, Christine Tennant, Oliver Clingan (N/Abbey) were the winners and the runners up were Alan Telfer Jnr (Max), Joyce Dicky (Hawick), Ken Coltman (Australia). The vice president Rae Gall presented the prizes.

Maxwelltown: Gents singles, sponsored by Belhaven Breweries for the Maxwelltown Cup, was the last of the annual tournament, played over two days.

On Friday the singles was played down to the last eight to qualify for the final stage on Saturday. The players that reached the finals stages. with the following results, were:

Quarter finals: Willie Brydson 21 (CD) Rae Gall 7 (Max); Keith Shuttleworth 21 (N/Abbey) Gary Robertson 13 (L/bie); Kevin Harper 21 (Dlbt) John Dunlop 17 (Kcl); Billy Haining 16 (M/mount) Hugh Robertson 21 (CD).

Semi finals: Willie Brydson 7 Keith Shuttleworth 21; Kevin Harper 16 Hugh Robertson 21.

Final: The winner was Keith Shuttleworth (N/Abbey) 21; the runner up was Hugh Robertson (Castle Douglas) 14. The president Adrian Potts presented the prizes.

Sanquhar: Open American pairs sponsored by Linda Wylie Bookmakers (Sanq). First: Simpson & Daryll Moore (Sanq); second equal: Bryan Hunter (Sanq), Ian Clark (Kcl) and Charlie & Jean Farrow (Kcl).

Presentation was made by the president David Nivison.

Kirkconnel: Open pairs abandoned at the quart finals stage due to weather conditions.

Gatehouse: Open pairs sponsored by Carleton Farm for the J Callen Memorial Cup: winners were Steven Johnstone, John Crawford (Kbt); the runners up were David Kilty, Andrew McClurg (P/William). The sponsor, William Graham and Robert Watson, presented the prizes.

Eastriggs: Open pairs sponsored by H & I Engineering & shield was won by Kevin Murray, Robert McNeil (Annan) and the runners up were Kenny Richardson, Billy Smith (E/riggs). Kenny Richardson presented the prizes on behalf of the sponsors.

Annan: Open triples sponsored by Mr & Mrs Nelson, Trojan Services Ltd was won by David Linton, Nicky & Phyllis Nicholson and George McCulloch; Gordon Irvine, Sheila Woodhouse runners up. All prizes winners from Annan. The presentation was made by Keith Nelson for the sponsors

Gretna: Mixed American rinks sponsored by W Grieve Garage, for the Border Upholstery shield. First: David Ferguson, Debbie Renwick (E/fld), Jimmy Johnstone (Gretna), Jimmy Little jnr (Annan). Second: Betty Park, Doreen Millar, Lawrence Graham, Kenny Miller (Gretna). President John Bryden Snr presented the prizes.

Sanquhar: Mixed Triples for the Jean Nivison Memorial trophy, sponsored b y E D Turnbull, was won by Jimmy Broatch (T/hill) Stuart & Yvonne Hiddleston (Sanq); runners up were Billy and Barbara Watson (Sanq), Margaret Little (Dalbt). Presentation was made by president David Nivison. The tournament, organised by David Nivison, has run now for four years and the sum raised is not yet known but will be shared between the Alexandra Unit (Dumfries) and Cancer Research UK.

New Abbey: Mixed American Triples: 1 Andrew & Alexa Snape (Dfs), Willie Mair (N/Abbey); 2 Bill & Helen Neville, Alistair Saville (N/Abbey); 3 John and Dorothy Bigham, Jean Hawes (N/Abbey). President Eric Johnstone made the presentations.

Marchmount: Open ‘Set’ singles for the T Marr Cup which was cancelled earlier in the season took place recently. It was won by Derek Smith (M/mount), runner up Stuart Garside (M/mount). The presentations were made by president Jockie Newlands.

SYBA

The Scottish Young Bowlers representing Dumfries and Galloway Counties in the Scottish Finals at Grangemouth on Saturday are:

Singles: P Brown (Kbt); Pairs: J Johnstone, G Kirkpatrick (Gretna); Triples S Goodwin, K Haining, C Goodwin (M/mount).

The SYBA playdowns at Ardeer & Seneca Bowling Clubs will take place on Sunday, August 17.

The players selected are: P Brown, J Payne (G/cairn); S Goodwin, M McQueen, C Goodwin, M Coltart, D Cardley, H McKenzie, R Glendinning (M/Mount); J Johnstone, G Kirkpatrick, (Gretna): R Lenza (T/hill), E McCall, C Halliday (Max).

A coach will take the bowlers to Ardeer BC early in the morning. Supporters will be welcomed on a first come basis.

County finals

The Dumfriesshire Bowling Association County Finals are being held at Dumfries Bowling Club starting on Saturday, August 9 with the junior singles: Sanquhar (Robert Menzies) v Lockerbie (Gary Robertson).

On Sunday, August 10 at Dumfries Bowling Club are the following matches.

11.30am – Pairs (Coronation Cup): Lochmaben ( Roger McGhie, Bruce Robison) v Thornhill (Bob Steel, Robert Peacock).

Mixed Pairs: (Nithsdale District Cup): Dumfries (Iain McLelland, Jan Oliver) v Eastriggs (Simon Kirk, Debbie Renwick).

Senior Pairs (Senior Cup): Sanquhar (John Hiddleston, Bud Fleming) v Lockerbie (Andy Graham, Bob Dalziel).

2pm – Triples: Border Cars Mazda Cup: Beechgrove (David Borthwick, Andy Armstrong, C Shanks) v Annan (Chris Donaldson, Willie Adam, Roger Murray)

Fours: (Isobel & Jim White Cup): Marchmount (Colin Peacock, Sandy Duff, A Dobson, Craig Allen) v Gretna (Colin Reilly, John Bryden Jnr, Robin Thorburn, J Laverick)

2.30pm – Gents Singles (McGhie Dairies Cup): Dumfries (Willie Rice) v Crichton (Bill Greer).

The results of the matches will be reported in the next issue of the Standard.

Ladies section

Maxwelltown: Wednesday, July 30 the ladies pairs sponsored by Gambit Leisure, for the Mossgiel Trophy was won by Helen Bell, Irene Hastings (L/maben). The runners up were Sheena Johnstone, Rene Denholm (C.R.). Kay Smith the ladies president presented the prizes.

Sanquhar: American Triples sponsored by Burnside Tearooms for the CPS Shield First: M Kirkwood, S Campbell, M Murray (N/Cumnock): Second: Elma Mackie, Yvonne Hiddleston, Janette Cano (Sanq). The presentation was made by Jean Hiddleston.

Dumfries: started their annual tournament week with the ladies pairs for the Rosebowl, sponsored by Belhaven Breweries. Winners Maureen Gracie (L/maben), Kathy Moffat (Dfs) runners up Mary Smyth, Jean Reid (Dfs).
