ALL FOUR Queens’ Trust League games went ahead on Saturday. Champions Lochar Thistle recorded a fully deserved 3-0 win at Lochmaben to start off where they ended last season.
In a fairly even first half, Ross Woodward headed a corner in at the back post to give Lochar the lead although Stuart Robinson hit the post for Lochmaben.
The second half, though, saw Lochar take control. On 65 minutes, Scott Neil bundled in their second from close range before Lochmaben had two men sent off in eight minutes.
Their misery was compounded when Mike McGauchie squared for Terry Jardine to slot in Lochar’s third with 10 minutes left.
An upset at Moffat saw Morton Thistle overturn an interval deficit against Upper Annandale to record an excellent 4-3 win.
Aidan Bain had a fine game in goal for Thistle but the whole team played well, especially in the second half. Ross Dawson headed Uppers in front only for Mark Cravens to equalise from 15 yards. After good work by Neil Roddick, Ross scored again to give Uppers an interval lead.
Nick Newbiggin did well to allow Ross Edwards to make it 2-2 and then a cracker of a 20-yard shot by Steven McDill put Morton in front. Back came Uppers, with Aaron Currie tapping in, but Morton grabbed a deserved winner when Dale Talaszko beat the offside trap and slotted home.
A close, clean game between YMCA and Terregles Athletic saw YM nick a 2- 1 win.
Terregles had been two down but came back strongly towards the end, pulling one back with a spectacular 30- yard effort by Sandy Bowie and then being thwarted in the last minute by a fine double save from a penalty kick by Paul Hastings in YM’s goal.
YM were one up at the break after Mike McGhie cut back for Kevin Roy to score. It was Kevin again, 10 minutes into the second half, who netted with a superb overhead kick after good work by Mark McGhie and Mike McGhie.
Dynamo Star hit fine form to beat Maxwelltown Thistle 6-3.
In an even first half, both scored twice, but two quick goals just after the break saw Star move clear and they never looked back.
A fierce free-kick from 25 yards by Stevie Green put Star in front in 20 minutes. Mark Milligan squared for Ross Milligan to volley into the top corner with the outside of his boot to make it 1-1, only for Scott Alexander’s deflected shot to put Star back in front. A penalty by Michael Stevenson made it 2-2 at half-time.
Blair Steele side-footed in from 12 yards and Andy Morrison made it 4-2 to Star with an exquisite volley. It was five when Scott ran through for his second and a defensive howler allowed Ian Anderson to make it six. Late on, Sandy Kennedy hit Max’s consolation third.
Funeral directors John Pagan & Son are again the sponsors of the League Cup, something the league very much appreciates.
Four games last Wednesday saw Lochmaben swamp Morton 8-2 with three goals from Stuart Robinson, two for Stevie Hislop and singles for Shane Watson, Laurie Maxwell and Cammie Thorburn; Graeme Kilpatrick had both Morton goals.
In the same section, goals from Neil Roddick and Aaron Currie gave Uppers victory over Max Thistle.
Section B saw Lochar overwhelm YM 8-1. Bob Hampson scored for YM while there was a hat-trick for Mike McGauchie, two for Kris Shannon, and Ross Woodward, Terry Jardine and Darren McKnight also scored.
Terregles beat Dynamo Star 3-1 through goals from Craig Lavan, Alan Birdsall and John Howie, with Scott Alexander replying for Star.
