Crichton in control of the football

THE MIDWEEK league fixtures threw up some very interesting encounters with Threave Rovers travelling to play Crichton at Hospital Park for a match which turned out to be very even and a game of two halves.

The home side were three goals to the good by the break with Roman Soltys, Stefan Stankiewicz and Gary Kerr finding the net.

Threave struck back though in the second half with Andrew Donnelly and James Fingland pulling the lead back to a single goal before substitute Norman Montgomery took the pressure off the home side with a goal five minutes from time.

With two minutes to go Willie Beattie scored a third for Threave from the penalty spot but Crichton held on to take three precious points.

Abbey Vale’s match with Annan Athletic was switched to New Abbey but this did not stop Vale from going down by four goals to one against a strong Galabank side.

Annan’s scorers were Lewis Walker, Ryan Adamson and two from Danny Dunglinson.

The Wigtownshire derby at Trammondford between Wigtown and Bladnoch and Newton Stewart resulted in the usual lively contest with the home side taking the lead in 18 minutes when Ross McCrindle scored with a hitch kick.

Newton then took the game to the home side and Willie Rennie fed in Micky Sutherland who made no mistake to level the match six minutes later.

In 28 minutes Gary Smith gave the visitors the lead which they held until the break.

Micky Sutherland increased Newton’s lead seven minutes after the re-start with a flick on from an Andrew Davidson free kick and with 65 minutes on the clock Willie Rennie headed home number four.

With 12 minutes left Micky Sutherland scored his hat-trick when he fired home goal number five for Newton as they went nap in what was a very good and confident performance all round.

There was a Stewartry derby at Gatehouse where Fleet Star entertained St Cuthbert Wanderers with the Kirkcudbright side finding the net four times without reply.

Saints scorers were Jamie Clark in the first minute with Mark Baker adding two in the second half along with a single from Stuart Maxwell with Star’s Terry McKie seeing red.

Stranraer had a comfortable six goals to nil victory over Creetown while the match at Glencaple between Heston Rovers and Mid Annandale was the seventh victim of the weather so far this season.
