Murray mints himself a Gold medal

Andy Murray has banished the heartbreaking memories of his Wimbledon final defeat against Roger Federer by beating the Swiss tennis genius on the same court to take a glorious Olympic gold.

Just 28 days ago the Scot was reduced to tears on Centre Court after being beaten by the world number one, but today he overpowered Federer to claim an emphatic straight sets victory.

The atmosphere on Centre was electric with cries of "Team GB, Team GB, Team GB" and was noticeably more raucous than Wimbledon finals day. And if Murray had any demons after his Wimbledon final defeat had definitely overcome them as he swept Federer away in less than two hours.

He sank to his knees in the moment of victory then climbed into the family box to embrace his girlfriend Kim Sears and proud mother Judy.

He told the BBC: "It's number one for me - the biggest win of my life."

Murray has the chance to go for another gold straight away on Centre as he partners Laura Robson in the mixed doubles.
