£1.7m payout for mine blast trooper

A paratrooper who lost his left leg after he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan has been awarded £1.7 million damages.

The 35-year-old was injured in Helmand Province in September 2006, Judge Nicholas Chambers QC heard at London's High Court.

Counsel Paul Rose QC said the soldier's right foot was so badly damaged that it might also need to be amputated should a planned operation with only a 70% success rate fail.
