Call for limited short sentences

The SNP has seized on a report into English penal reform which highlighted a "courageous lead" to tackle prison overcrowding in Scotland.

The Commission on English Prisons, led by former prime minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie Booth QC, lent support to "radical" moves in Scotland - including SNP plans to limit the number of short sentences.

Nationalist backbencher Angela Constance MSP said the report echoed former First Minister Henry McLeish's recommendations for change in Scotland.
