A Dumfriesshire woman died yesterday when a car careered off the A701 road and crashed into a ditch near Beattock.
The 46-year-old victim was the passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa being driven by a 20-year-old man.
He sustained minor injuries in the single vehicle crash which happened just before 10am at Marchbank Woods about a mile from the village.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which resulted in the car coming to rest on its side.
A police spokesman said: “The collision occurred at around 9.55am. A 46-year-old local woman sustained fatal injuries as a result.
“No details of the woman will be released until all family members have been informed.
“Anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision or saw the vehicle prior to the incident is asked to contact police on 0845 600 5701 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
The injured driver was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment and was expected to be released before the end of the day.
The road was closed after the crash and diversions were set up while investigations were carried out.
