A NEW support system has been introduced for people in Dumfries and Galloway who have Parkinson’s disease.
The health board have appointed Susan Coull, a specialist nurse in Parkinson’s treatment.
There are more than 300 people in Dumfries and Galloway who are living with the progressive neurological condition.
The management of Parkinson’s has improved with the use of various drugs and multi-disciplinary input but there is currently no cure to treat the illness.
Susan, who is based at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, said: “When someone is diagnosed with Parkinsons, my aim is to provide a service which offers accurate information, a point of contact when needed and ongoing clinical monitoring.”
Susan believes the key is for people to successfully self manage their condition which will help them have the best possible quality of life.
She added: “Parkinson’s disease medication is crucial in achieving good symptomatic control and patients worry that hospital admission will disrupt their usual routine. My role is to help staff understand PD medications and the importance of getting these on time.”
The Parkinson’s Disease Society is a great resource for people with the illness and healthcare professionals. Anyone wanting more information should visit www. parkinson’s.org.
