Langholme student is named British Apprentice of the Year

A LANGHOLM student has been named as British Apprentice of the Year.

Richard Sagar, who is in his final year studying his electrical apprenticeship at Dumfries and Galloway College, beat nine other finalists to the top prize.

The 21-year-old was judged over four days at the UK Skills Final in Birmingham and the apprentices had to pass practical skills tests based on real-life work situations.

He impressed judges with his technical skill and knowledge, as well as his professional attitude.

And now Richard is going on to compete globally in the international event being held in Canada later this year.

Richard said: “It was an honour to take part and I was so impressed with the high standards of everyone competing.

“My apprenticeship has been a fantastic experience – and my employer has been great about giving me time off to enter the competitions.

“I wanted to take an apprenticeship as I didn’t fancy university and wanted to do something a bit more hands on. “I’m really enjoying it and I hope I can eventually work my way to a senior management position within the company.”

Ian Johnstone at Dumfries and Galloway College said: “Richard is an outstanding student with excellent career prospects.

“He has worked very hard and we are all proud that he has been named the best Electrical Apprentice in Britain.

“We wish him the best of luck in the next stage of the competition this month.”
