SHE’S an inspiration to the children of Dalbeattie Primary School where she’s the devoted head teacher.
But Jan Jamieson from Dumfries was stunned to find out that she’s an impressive role model to people right across the country after coming out top in a national magazine competition this week.
She was nominated for the contest to find Scotland’s most inspirational lady by a friend from church, Judith Dirom.
Judith entered Jan for her “amazing can-do attitude” and positive outlook on life.
At the start of the year, Jan was told the cancer she thought she had beaten had returned and she was given only four months to live.
Although her first feelings were shock and disbelief, she refused to give in to the disease and five months down the line, Jan returned to the job she loves and lives life to the full every day.
Proud husband Sandy, who is pastor at the Lighthouse Church in Dumfries, described his wife as a “remarkable woman”. He said: “She has always been a dedicated worker and her courage and strength has been a huge inspiration to me and our three children.”
Friend Judith added: “Janice is so humble, her positive outlook makes me so strong. With her as a role model I believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
“She is loved by all at the church. She gives so many people, young and old, hope and deserves to be recognised. Her beauty shines from within.”
After reaching the final stage of the contest organised by No 1 magazine, readers were asked to vote for the ladies they thought were most deserving of winning the prizes worth £10,000.
Jan said it was a “total surprise” to find out she’d won.
The delighted 46-year-old said: “I’d like to say a huge thanks to Judith for nominating me and to all those who voted for me. I feel very honoured and my family are equally delighted.
“The pupils at school keep telling me I deserve it and I know a lot of the parents also took the time to vote, which is lovely.
“When I was told I only had four months to live, I decided I wasn’t going to take it lying down and would fight as hard as I could.
“I just set myself new goals all the time and remain as positive as I can.”
