A SPECIAL school in Dumfries has improved well after it was handed a critical report a year ago.
Langlands has been given the thumbs up by inspectors in a follow up to their 2008 review.
They asked for an improvement plan after being concerned about pupils’ achievements in language and communication, understanding and relating to the environment and their development of skills for life after school.
They also wanted the quality of learning, teaching and the curriculum brushed up and more focus on joint working with health services.
But after returning to the school in September, inspectors have released a report saying the school is doing better.
They say the “young people are now more involved in lessons and indicate to staff whether they have enjoyed activities and what they have learned.
“They are following simple timetables and understand the purpose of their lessons.
“Pupils who use alternatives to verbal communication are developing appropriate signs.
“All young people are developing an awareness of the rhythm of the day.
“Regular physical activity is a feature of the school day and includes movement sessions, swimming and physiotherapy.
“Staff are now much clearer about the purpose of the activities they have planned and how they contribute to the young people's development.
“They have a much clearer understanding of the young people’s needs.
“Staff are much more involved in improving the school and are very positive about the improvements they have achieved for young people.
“Staff place high priority on young people’s health and welfare and provide a safe place to learn.
“The school works well with other agencies who provide specialist services.
“There is an active and supportive parent council.”
Council education officer, Ian Scott, said: “This is a much improved report for Langlands School.
“The acting head teacher has gained the confidence of staff, young people and parents.
“She involves all staff in developing more appropriate approaches to learning and in improving learning activities for young people.
“I am certain that with the support of the education authority, staff and parents, the school can improve even further.”
