School kids get active in netball festival

MORE than 84 Annandale and Eskdale pupils from 12 primary schools took part in the fourth annual Active Schools Netball Festival held at Hecklegirth on Thursday.

The event, run by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Leisure and Sport Service, saw the small schools trophy won by Cummertrees Primary pupils who fought off tough competition from second placed St Mungo, who were taking part for the first time, and Brydekirk, who finished in third place.

The large schools event saw Newington Primary triumph over Langholm, closely followed by Hecklegirth in third place.

The organisers thanked Amy McQueen and Ruth McNaught from the Dumfries Blues Netball Club and Tina Lockhart, the active schools co-ordinator, for their expert umpiring on the day.

Also, last week, more than 180 primary school pupils from Annandale and Eskdale took part in the annual 4x100m sprint relay competition at the Everholm running track.

The event, organised by the council’s leisure and sport active schools co-ordinators, saw 18 local primary schools competing to see who was “relay” fantastic this year.

This was the largest number of schools and pupils to enter the event so far.

The competition was split into three categories; small schools, P6/7 girls, P6/7 boys.

The winning schools, who all received medals, were:

Small schools: 1 Cummertrees, 2 St Mungo, 3 Hightae.

P6/7 Girls: 1 Langholm A, 2 Newington A, 3 Moffat.

P6/7 Boys: 1 Newington A, 2 Eastriggs, 3 Moffat.

All pupils who took part in the races received a certificate of achievement.
