Dumfries bypass closure to cause chaos

MOTORISTS face major upheaval this weekend when Dumfries bypass will be closed for resurfacing work.

The repairs will take place over three nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the bypass closed between 7pm and 7am.

Traffic will be diverted through Dumfries.

The road will remain open during the day although a temporary surface and ramps will be in place throughout the operation.

Resurfacing takes place between the Lockerbie road roundabout, A709, and the Edinburgh Road roundabout, A701, on Friday and Saturday night with workmen moving on to the section between the Edinburgh Road and the Glasgow Road roundabout, A76, on Sunday night.

Amey, the company responsible for trunk roads in the region, says the road has become worn and requires attention.

The company says it will take advantage of the opportunity to empty gullies, carry out bridge maintenance and drainage works during the stoppage.

Ken Bryden, network area manager based at Amey’s Dumfries office, said: “By carrying out work overnight we will minimise disruption to this busy trunk road.

“The new surface will provide a smoother, pothole-free journey for road users as this has deteriorated over time.”
