Biker killed in A75 crash

A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a crash on the A75 near Dumfries.

Daniel Davies, aged 28, of Auldgirth, died when he came off his bike and collided with a lorry on Monday.

The smash happened just east of Collin at around 1.45pm, and police closed the road for a number of hours while investigations were carried out and the carriageway cleared.

Motorists were warned to avoid the area and diversions were put in place. The road didn’t re-open until Monday evening.

Yesterday a police spokesman told the Standard a probe to establish how the accident happened is continuing.

He said: “We are still making investigations into the cause of the crash and an investigation process is being carried out.

“We would like to hear from anybody who might have seen something or witnessed the incident to come forward.

“Even people who might not have stopped yesterday, but perhaps have information that could be useful, should contact us because we’d be glad to hear from them.”

The stretch of the A75 around Collin is an accident blackspot and has claimed the lives of a number of motorists in recent years.

An Annan man died in January – 11 days after he was involved in a horrific two-vehicle smash near Mouswald Banks.

This tragedy followed several incidents in 2005 and 2006.

In September 2006, 62-year-old man from Moniaive was killed when his Land Rover crashed four miles east of Collin and that happened just one month after two friends, who lived in Dumfries, died on the Collin by-pass.

In November 2005 a three-car smash one mile east of Collin claimed the lives of a Dalton man and a woman from Stoke on Trent.

Anybody who witnessed Monday’s crash or has any further information should contact police on 0845 600 701.
