SIR – Like, I am sure, most of your readers, I was amused by the front page photograph of 23-months-old Lewis Thorburn (no relation) holding his voting paper in his hand.
However, I was not amused by the statement on an inside page by the usual anonymous spokesperson for the council saying his parents may have committed a criminal offence if the form was wrongly completed and further inquiries will be made. What a waste of ratepayers money.
If Lewis arrived at the poll it would be obvious he was under age for voting. End of story. If his voting paper was found in the bin and someone went to vote in his name, this is “personation” and a criminal offence.
A bin-raker might not have seen the Standard story, but I am sure all of our local polling agents have seen it and the offender would be nabbed.
I write as a former polling agent whose father was a returning officer.
