A Dumfries voluntary group will celebrate the Chinese New Year with a party on Monday.
Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association (DGMA) will see in the Year of the Snake – which begins on Sunday – by hosting a jam-packed event that is open to anyone.
The party will feature a range of traditional activities including a lion dance, Chinese New Year song, a kung fu show and a Chinese tea ceremony. There will also be a cultural fusion with performances of a “Gangnam Style” dance as well as a DGMA youth group rendition of the Alicia Keys track “Girl on Fire”.
Youth development worker Yen Hongmei Jin said: “It’s going to be very exciting and it’s the first time we have done anything like this.
“The Chinese community in Dumfries stands at about 200 now so we are expecting a lot of people.
“But anyone is welcome to come along – all we ask is that you bring a dish! I’m going to make spring rolls but people can bring anything.”
She added: “We just want people to feel valued and we really want the community to come along and support it.”
DGMA has worked to raise the profile of diverse cultures in the area since 2003.
The Chinese New Year party takes place at the DGMA Centre in Irish Street, Dumfries. The programme starts at 4pm and will last until 8pm.
